Submitting Images for Use as Originals
Each week a fractal is sent to the FEUser
mailing list, and that fractal comes from someone in the
group.
Submitting a fractal has both benefits and responsibilities.
For the benefits, a great group of fractal artists will be
modifying your work. You may see techniques and visions
which can help you grow as an artist. And alternate visions from
your starting place will help you understand yourself better as an
artist. For responsibility, you are required to keep your
work anonymous. If someone makes alternate choices from
yours you don't care for, you cannot defend your work. You
need to quietly agree to disagree.
In seven short days, it will be someone else’s turn.
Some info and guidelines on how and what to submit:
-
To submit, send the spot file only to
WeeklyTheme@FractalFairy.com
-
Submit original work.
Don’t submit work that you have posted before or work very similar to work you already posted.
For both you and the participants, remaining anonymous is important.
-
Submit good work.
Pick something that you really like and that expresses your personal choices. You will gain more from submitting if
you do.
-
Submit robust fractals
Some fractals are fragile -- any change to the palette or a function and they are gone.
Other, more robust fractals preserve their essence through many changes.
The more robust fractals give FEUsers more choices and freedom to create their alternate works.
-
There is no guarantee if or when your work will be used.
With a lot of people on the mailing list, and only one fractal a week, it can take some time for any particular submission to
be used.
Questions and Answers
Q: If my fractal is the one being used as the
original, can I post modifications?
A: Absolutely…and who is to know since the
original post is anonymous.
Q: Can I make more than one submission per
week?
A: Sure.
If you have images that you believe to be improvements on
the original, go for it.
But be aware the goal is to make the best fractal you can from the
starting point, so don't litter the theme with every permutation
you find.
Q: Must I state how I modified the image?
A: Yes, the reason for this exercise is two-fold - to show your talent at
post-processing and to help others learn how to do what you did. Please be
sure to state which program you used (such as PSP7, Photoshop, Photo Filtre) as
well as the filters you used.
Q: Must I state how I modified the spot?
A: No since members will be able to look at the spot file and see your final
formula and can compare it to the original. However, it would be nice if you
mentioned why you liked this formula more than the original.
See the example images below for ideas on what you can do for the spot file
modification.
Do you see how the resulting image is different and yet very similar to the
original?
You can tell the modified images came from the original images spot file.
The first fractal was modified within FE itself therefore it is considered an SFM fractal and not a PPO fractal.
Please note that the #4 original image in this table is the same as the #4 original image in the table below with
very different modified fractal examples.

See the example images below for ideas on what you can do for post-processing. Sometimes a spot file is modified in FE and then further post-processed in a graphic editor. #5 is an example of this.
